We're all about news... good news!
Jesus alluded to this good news (or "gospel") like this: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life." In fact he went on to say: "No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
But what did he mean by that? How is Jesus "the way, the truth, and the life," and the only way to God himself? It's quite an audacious claim when you think about it.
To understand what he meant and why he said this, we must first understand who God is and what he’s like.
What's God Like?
God is holy. That means he is perfect, without any blemish of any kind but perfect in beauty, splendor and majesty. He is morally pure, and absolutely “other” from us. And he’s also loving. Full of love toward us - those who were made by him, made like him, and made for him.
Why does this matter?
The problem is that we’ve strayed very far from being like him. In fact, the Bible says that we’ve all sinned and fallen short. We have gone on our own, shaking our fists in rebellion against the God who made us and loves us. And that creates a real problem for us. The God who is perfectly loving is also perfectly just, meaning that he must respond to our rebellion with his holy judgment, his wrath.
What's the good news?
The amazingly good news is that God sent his Son to rescue us from the judgment we have earned and deserve, and bring us back to himself. In a mission of love, God the Father sent God the Son - who took on a human nature as Jesus, a small town carpenter who lived 2,000 years ago. And this Jesus, as fully God and fully man, lived a perfect life in our place. He obeyed where we have failed. Then he gave his life, being executed on a Roman cross, not for his own sins since he had none. He died a sacrificial death, as a substitute taking our place in judgment for our sins. After three days in a tomb, he rose physically, bodily from the dead. No other religious leader has ever done that, or ever will! And Jesus has ascended triumphantly back to heaven, where he currently reigns and from where we await his return.
In this way Jesus really is “the way, and the truth, and the life." He is “the way” for us to come to God genuinely. He is “the truth” in that in Jesus we see God accurately. And he is “the life,” bestowing on all who believe in him real life, now and forever. But what should we do with such a Person and such a claim?
How should I respond?
The response required is simple: turn to Jesus and trust in Jesus. It’s turning from going our own way. You might think of this as surrendering to Jesus. We turn from going our own way, and we turn to Jesus by believing. We trust in him. We rely only on what he has done to bring us to God, and nothing we ourselves can do.
We hope you can see that this good news is the best news in the Universe. As such, it demands from us a response. Disinterest in this good news is the same as rejecting this news and the God who loves you. So we would urge you to turn to Jesus and trust in him even now.
